Choosing an Exotic Pet

Choosing an Exotic Pet

Choosing a normal pet like a cat or dog normally does not require a lot of thought or consideration because more often than not, you have seen or played with one. However, when choosing an exotic pet, there are several more things you should consider. It is important to thoroughly consider the reasons you want an exotic pet and the reality of caring for the type of exotic pet you want.

There are a few basic principles you should follow when you consider choosing an exotic pet.  First, avoid impulse adoption. This means do not immediately buy or take home an exotic animal because it is cute or you really want it, but have not done enough research on it yet. Take time to truly discover your motivations for why you want this exotic pet. If you think the ‘cool’ factor is the correct motivation for choosing an exotic pet, then you should reconsider your options. Exotic pets are long-term commitments, and can sometimes be overwhelming to take care of. Consider your long terms plans and how the exotic pet fits into this plan. Will you always have sufficient time and money to properly take care of this exotic pet by providing adequate housing, space, care, and attention?

Learn all you can about a potential pet before bringing it to your home. Make sure you check out which kinds of pets are legal or illegal in your area. Do not break the law in an attempt to adopt or buy an exotic pet just because you might get away with it. Legal problems will most likely result in the loss of your pet. Third, you must have all the necessary equipment and supplies prepared before you take the pet home. This will allow the pet and yourself to have an easy transition into its new home. Make sure to consider the exotics pets’ size, sociability, feeding requirements, housing, and expenses. Larger exotic pets will require more space and exercise, and can also be more difficult to handle. When feeding your exotic pet, commercially prepared food may suffice for some pets, but others will require a variety of fresh food, or mice or insects. The sociability of the exotic animal is very important. You will have to decide whether you want an exotic pet that enjoys human interaction, or is happier being left alone. The size and type of housing you have is important to consider before choosing an exotic pet. Note any special equipment that may be needed such as an ultraviolet lamp. Keep in mind that housing, supplies, food and veterinary care costs often can be more than the pet itself. Only choose what you can afford.

Finally, before choosing an exotic pet, consider the pet’s compatibility with children, its longevity, and other tendencies the animal may have. There are many types of exotic animals out there that can make great pets for those looking for a companion different from a traditional household animal, just be sure you’re ready for the experience.
